What is the current landscape of psychedelic-assisted sex therapy?

Sex, like money, is one of the biggest motivators in our society, driving decisions, shaping perspectives, and significantly impacting overall well-being. Sexuality is a fundamental human drive, so it’s no surprise that sex truly does sell, but what happens when sex shifts from being a thrilling and intimate topic to one overshadowed by dysfunction or disconnection? Research from Imperial College claims “that sexual dysfunction is linked to lower well-being in healthy adults, can impact relationship satisfaction, and is even linked to subjective happiness and 'meaning in life’.” Therefore, prioritizing sexual health as you would prioritize going to the gym or a well-balanced diet, is just as important in your overall health.

Psychedelics are seeing a resurgence from mainstream media to therapeutic research. In fact, psychedelics have been used for thousands of years as part of religious and cultural rituals to help individuals undergo a mind-altering experience, which is exactly why it may prove to be beneficial for the context of therapeutic practices. According to Paul Frysh’s article, A Long, Strange Trip: Psychedelics Meet Mainstream Medicine, “the current boom in psychedelic research actually started in 1990, when the FDA allowed a single researcher to study DMT (the active ingredient in the drink ayahuasca).” The success of these studies has brought to light that psychedelics are far less toxic than other Schedule I drugs like cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl, therefore a much better option for more extensive research in the field of counseling.

While sex and psychedelics can individually be taboo subjects, combining the two can lead to fascinating and potentially transformative conversations. With psychedelic-assisted therapy being a renaissance for mental health, we can also begin to look towards substances such as MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine as a tool for therapists and individuals who are looking for alternative ways to access different parts of the brain. Although still in the early stages, the intersection of psychedelics and sexuality can tap into the deeply personal and often transformative nature of both these experiences.

How do psychedelics impact sexual function and desire?

When we think of sex we often think of the physical aspects, however, it’s important to remember that sexual intimacy affects us both physically and emotionally. Our thoughts and feelings before sex can significantly influence the outcome, whether it revolves around feeling stressed after a long work day or even if we aren't feeling deeply connected to our partners, our emotions can often be the driving factor that determines whether we have a fulfilling sex life. Many people may feel self-conscious when it comes to sexual situations and experiences, they may not know how to go about pleasuring another or may have insecurities of their own. While some turn to substances, like alcohol, to lighten the mood or gain confidence, these substances can have a negative effect on sexual performance. Whereas, psychedelics, on the other hand, may increase ease without compromising performance.

Current research on how psychedelics can impact sexual function and desire is still fairly sparse. However, from the reports that we do have, we can begin to conclude that the path of psychedelic therapy is leading to many beneficial results. Professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. David Hellerstein, explains that “psychedelics have been shown to enhance social and interpersonal connections, reduce self-focused worry, and potentially increase brain plasticity”. Additionally, researchers from Imperial College London's Centre for Psychedelic Research examined the impact of psychedelic experiences on sexual functioning and concluded that out of a total of 261 people from their analysis, saw improvements across all areas of sexual functions for up to 6 months after their psychedelic experience.

Psychedelics are known to create an environment where altered states of consciousness may help expand one’s perspective and deepen intimacy. This alternative approach may appeal to those who feel that their sexual needs are often unmet without some form of mind-altering substance or are looking for an out-of-body experience where they can be less in their head and more in tune with the present moment. While some prefer to experience life, including sex, in an unaltered state, those looking to feel less restricted and ego-driven may find psychedelics a more effective and expansive alternative.

In a groundbreaking study published in Nature Scientific Reports, The most significant improvements were in sexual pleasure, satisfaction with their appearance, satisfaction, and communication with their partner, as well as perceiving sex as a ‘spiritual experience’.

Which psychedelics show promise for sexual health?

Psychedelic-assisted sex therapy is paving a new path for individuals struggling with sexual issues. However, here are a few psychedelic substances that are specifically being explored for their benefits in sexual health and therapy:

MDMA

Often called the "empathy drug," MDMA can increase feelings of closeness, trust, and emotional openness. It's being studied for its potential to enhance couples therapy and address sexual trauma.

Psilocybin:

The active compound in "magic mushrooms" may help reduce anxiety and depression, which can positively impact sexual function and satisfaction.

LSD:

Some anecdotal reports suggest that LSD can enhance sensory perception and emotional connection during sexual experiences.

2C-B:

This lesser-known psychedelic has been reported to have aphrodisiac properties and is being investigated for its potential to treat female sexual dysfunction.

Ayahuasca:

While not typically associated with sexuality, ayahuasca's profound psychological effects may help address deep-seated issues affecting sexual health.

Each of these substances has unique properties and potential applications in sex therapy, warranting further research to understand their specific benefits and risks.

What are the potential benefits of psychedelic-assisted sex therapy?

Growing in popularity not only in a recreational setting but also in a therapeutic setting, psychedelic-assisted sex therapy presents numerous benefits for enhancing one’s sexual health. Based on Nature’s Report of Psychedelics and Sexual Functioning: A Mixed-methods Study, individuals showed improvements in “communicating with their partners, experiencing greater sexual pleasure during sex, being more satisfied with their partner and their own appearance, and being more likely to perceive sex as a spiritual experience”. In general, we can see that psychedelic-assisted sex therapy is showing a lot of promise for those seeking additional tools for resolving sexual dysfunction, however, its benefits surpass these baseline issues.

Treating sexual dysfunction and anxiety: Psychedelics may offer a unique approach to addressing sexual issues like low libido, erectile dysfunction, or anorgasmia. This is because psychedelic substances have the potential to help people overcome mental blocks such as anxiety, stress, or past traumas that may contribute to their sexual difficulties. The introspective nature of psychedelic experiences may allow people to open new neural pathways and gain new perspectives on their sexuality.

Psychedelic experiences can help individuals confront and release sexual shame or performance anxiety through its ego-dissolving effects, allowing people to temporarily step outside of their usual thought patterns, potentially leading to new insights and a more positive relationship with their sexuality.

Healing sexual trauma: Those working through past sexual trauma may find psychedelics particularly beneficial for their helpful nature in emotional processing, allowing individuals to revisit traumatic experiences without fear and anxiety getting in the way, potentially enabling deeper healing and integration of traumatic memories.

Enhancing intimacy: The empathy-promoting effects of certain psychedelics, particularly MDMA, may help couples deepen their emotional and physical connection. By fostering open communication and vulnerability, these experiences could strengthen bonds between partners and create a foundation for more satisfying sexual relationships.

Exploring sexual identity: The introspective nature of psychedelic journeys may assist individuals in understanding and accepting their sexual orientation or gender identity. These experiences can provide a safe space for self-exploration and acceptance, potentially leading to greater authenticity in one's sexual expression.

Reigniting passion: For long-term couples, psychedelic experiences might help break out of sexual ruts and rediscover excitement in their relationship. By promoting novelty and openness, these substances could help partners see each other in a new light and reignite the spark in their sexual connection.

Promoting body positivity and acceptance: Altered self-perception during psychedelic states could lead to greater body acceptance and sexual confidence. This shift in perspective may help individuals overcome insecurities and embrace their bodies, leading to more fulfilling sexual experiences.

As research in this field continues to grow, psychedelic-assisted sex therapy offers exciting possibilities for addressing a wide range of sexual concerns and enhancing overall sexual well-being. However, it's crucial to approach this modality with caution and under the guidance of trained professionals to ensure safe and ethical practices. The future of sex therapy may well include these powerful tools, opening new avenues for healing, growth, and sexual fulfillment.

What are the risks and challenges of using psychedelics in sex therapy?

Despite the potential benefits, there are significant risks and challenges to consider:

  1. Legal status: Most psychedelics remain illegal in many countries, limiting research and legitimate therapeutic applications.
  2. Psychological risks: Psychedelics can trigger anxiety, panic, or exacerbate underlying mental health conditions in some individuals.
  3. Physical risks: Some psychedelics can have physiological effects, such as increased heart rate or blood pressure, which may be dangerous for certain individuals.
  4. Consent and boundaries: Altered states of consciousness raise important ethical questions about consent and maintaining appropriate boundaries in therapeutic or intimate settings.
  5. Integration challenges: Without proper support and integration, insights gained during psychedelic experiences may not translate into lasting behavioral changes.
  6. Lack of standardization: The current underground nature of much psychedelic-assisted sex therapy means there's a lack of standardized protocols and quality control.
  7. Potential for abuse: The intimate nature of sex therapy combined with consciousness-altering substances creates a risk for potential abuse or exploitation.

Addressing these challenges will be crucial for the responsible development of psychedelic-assisted sex therapy as a legitimate and safe therapeutic modality.

How is psychedelic-assisted sex therapy conducted?

  1. Preparation: Thorough screening, education, and intention-setting sessions with a trained therapist or facilitator.
  2. Set and setting: Creating a safe, comfortable environment conducive to therapeutic work and intimate exploration.
  3. Guided session: A supervised psychedelic experience, often with a therapist present to provide support and guidance.
  4. Integration: Follow-up sessions to process insights, emotions, and experiences from the psychedelic journey.
  5. Practical application: Developing strategies to incorporate new perspectives into daily life and sexual relationships.

It's important to note that psychedelic-assisted sex therapy should always be conducted by trained professionals in appropriate settings, with full informed consent from all participants.

The integration of psychedelics and sexuality into therapeutic settings creates a new landscape for addressing sexual issues and enhancing intimate connections. This approach allows individuals who may be struggling with deep-seated sexual trauma, communication barriers, or even just a simple desire to elevate their sexual experiences to new heights of intimacy and spiritual oneness.

What was once seen as taboo may begin to shift, as psychedelic-assisted sex therapy becomes more accessible, offering new possibilities for sexual exploration and healing.
