Intimacy doesn’t just mean sex-"the best way to describe intimacy is to think of it as a connection," says certified sex therapist Kristie Overstreet. "If you want to be intimate in some way, you want to connect."

Within the plethora of euphemisms for sex, intimacy is one of them. However, getting intimate with someone doesn’t have to mean physically. Intimacy is also a sense of closeness and familiarity with someone. And it can also exist in all sorts of relationships, not just romantic or sexual ones.

Here are the 6 main types of intimacy to help cultivate a deeper relationship...

1. Physical Intimacy

It’s quite understandable why intimacy and sex are often seen as synonymous. Sexual activity involves a high degree of physical closeness and vulnerability, which can lead to a deep emotional connection between two people. As writer, Acamea Deadwiler says “intimacy is about closeness, and intercourse is about as close as possible to another human that we can physically get”. Therefore physical intimacy creates the feeling of closeness through physical touch, which can include sex, but also includes non-sexual touch, such as kissing, hugging, and cuddling. While sexual intimacy is an important aspect of many romantic relationships, it is just one of the many types of intimacy that people can experience.

Examples of Physical Intimacy

  • Holding hands: is a simple yet powerful way to connect with your partner. It can convey a sense of comfort, security, and affection.
