Intimacy doesn’t just mean sex-"the best way to describe intimacy is to think of it as a connection," says certified sex therapist Kristie Overstreet. "If you want to be intimate in some way, you want to connect."

Within the plethora of euphemisms for sex, intimacy is one of them. However, getting intimate with someone doesn’t have to mean physically. Intimacy is also a sense of closeness and familiarity with someone. And it can also exist in all sorts of relationships, not just romantic or sexual ones.

Here are the 6 main types of intimacy to help cultivate a deeper relationship...

1. Physical Intimacy

It’s quite understandable why intimacy and sex are often seen as synonymous. Sexual activity involves a high degree of physical closeness and vulnerability, which can lead to a deep emotional connection between two people. As writer, Acamea Deadwiler says “intimacy is about closeness, and intercourse is about as close as possible to another human that we can physically get”. Therefore physical intimacy creates the feeling of closeness through physical touch, which can include sex, but also includes non-sexual touch, such as kissing, hugging, and cuddling. While sexual intimacy is an important aspect of many romantic relationships, it is just one of the many types of intimacy that people can experience.

Examples of Physical Intimacy

  • Holding hands: is a simple yet powerful way to connect with your partner. It can convey a sense of comfort, security, and affection.
  • Hugging: involves wrapping your arms around your partner. It can help to reduce stress and increase feelings of closeness and comfort.
  • Kissing: pressing your lips against your partner's lips, face, or body, can be a way to express love, passion, and desire.
  • Cuddling: involves holding each other while lying down or sitting together. It can create a sense of warmth, safety, and comfort.
  • Massaging: using your hands to rub, knead, or stroke your partner's body, can be a way to relax and connect with each other.
  • Dancing: moving your body to music with your partner, can be a fun and intimate way to connect physically.
  • Sexual intimacy: any type of sexual contact or activity between two people. It can involve a wide range of behaviors, depending on individual preferences and boundaries.

Overall, physical intimacy can take many different forms, and is an important aspect of building a strong and healthy relationship with your partner.

2. Emotional Intimacy

This type of intimacy involves candid, authentic sharing of thoughts, feelings, and experiences with one-another. It involves being able to tell each other your deepest fears, dreams, disappointments, and most complicated emotions, as well as feeling seen and understood when you do. Emotional intimacy means both you and your partner feel safe and comfortable with this type of uninhibited expression around each other, and often requires trust and vulnerability. Therefore resulting in a deep understanding and connection between you two.

Examples of Emotional Intimacy

  • Sharing your fears and vulnerabilities: Being able to open up to your partner about your fears and vulnerabilities requires a high level of trust. It can allow for deeper understanding and thus, make  you feel more connected to your partner.
  • Expressing your feelings: Being able to express your feelings and emotions to your partner is an important aspect of emotional intimacy. This can involve talking about how you feel about different situations, sharing your hopes and dreams, and expressing your love and affection.
  • Active listening: involves paying close attention to what your partner is saying, without interrupting or judging. It requires a willingness to be present in the moment and to really hear and understand your partner's perspective.
  • Empathy: Being able to empathize with your partner's feelings and experiences is an important aspect of emotional intimacy. It involves putting yourself in their shoes and trying to see things from their perspective.
  • Trust: Building trust with your partner is essential for emotional intimacy. It involves being reliable, honest, and transparent, and being able to rely on your partner to keep your secrets and support you in times of need.
  • Sharing experiences: Sharing experiences with your partner, such as traveling, trying new things, or exploring new hobbies together, can help to create a sense of closeness and connection.

Overall, emotional intimacy is about building a deep and meaningful connection with your partner, and it requires a willingness to be vulnerable, honest, and authentic with each other. By cultivating emotional intimacy, you can strengthen your relationship and build a foundation of trust and mutual support.

3. Intellectual Intimacy

This type of intimacy involves sharing ideas and thoughts with another person. It requires a mutual respect for each other's intellect and a desire to engage in meaningful conversations. Being comfortable with communicating beliefs and viewpoints without worrying about potential conflicts creates intellectual intimacy. Each person in the relationship has the freedom to think for themselves and believes that their opinions are valued—instead of feeling pressured to agree or scared to have a different point of view. This atmosphere encourages stimulating conversation and therefore, you can feel closer to the person who cares for you despite your differences and respects your voice.

Examples of Intellectual Intimacy

  • Engaging in deep conversations: This can involve discussing topics such as philosophy, politics, and social issues, as well as sharing your own thoughts and opinions.

Religious practice isn't necessary for spiritual intimacy, though it can serve the purpose. This closeness forms when you share poignant moments with your partner. Though praying and worshiping as a couple could qualify as one such moment, there are many other examples of spiritual intimacy.
